Primers You Need To Know About

Often touted as the “unnecessary step,” or the “extra layer,” it’s easy to see how Primers fall too often by the wayside. And what an unfortunate mistake that is! I’m here to shed some light on the wonders of this skin base—from extending the wear of your foundation throughout the day, perfecting skin’s texture, to minimizing the appearance of pores, there is a primer formula out there for you. Sometimes by using a primer you end up wearing less foundation coverage. If you’re trying to even out your skin tone- try a color correcting primer to cancel out unwanted skin tones. Allow me to guide you through the numerous benefits of this infamously ignored product so that you may understand why you absolutely need it in your life. Here are a few primers that I’m currently using in my beauty wardrobe and you can find packed in my artist kit!

For Protective Layer

I like using a protective layer when I know I’ll be out in the sun. Sometimes I wear this alone over my moisturizer even if I’m skipping on foundation coverage. Giorgio Armani Maestro UV SPF 50PA I find is lightweight and fast absorbing, this primer is a foolproof solution to guarding delicate skin against the sun’s damaging rays. This formula also combats environmental stressors like pollution and harsh winds that cause premature aging. It’s nice to know your primer can protect your skin while keeping your makeup in place.

Stay Matte

Laura Mercier Oil Free. A fantastic solution to an oily t-zone, this primer is not exclusive to those with just oily/combination skin. I find that this primer also works beautifully on dry skin as the solid base for foundation that lasts- just make sure you really moisturize your skin if it’s super dry before applying this. It’s great for those who are acne-prone and have sensitive skin. Sometimes I add this only in the t-zone and use a primer with radiance on the rest of the face. Who says you have to limit yourself to using only one primer? I like my t-zone matte and the rest of the skin to glow. There are other options if you want a super matte finish- see below image!

To Refine and Smooth

Sisley Global Perfect Pore Minimizer corrects the skin’s texture and instantly tightens and minimizes the appearance of pores for your best complexion ever. Makeup glides right on and stays on throughout the day. Plus, this primer treats your skin with a dose of hydration that absorbs quickly with a mattifying finish. This is great to use even under your skincare- bonus! This is not just a primer for foundation, but also a product that you can incorporate into your skincare regimen.

For Glowing Effect

Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow Instant Focus Beauty Flash. This primer instantly blurs imperfections by amplifying luminosity, creating a spotlight effect on the face. Wear this one alone, underneath makeup, or even mixed in with foundation—the radiant results know no bounds. I sometimes wear this alone or mix it in with my moisturizer to give an extra boost of radiance. I’ve even been known to use this as a subtle highlighter on the cheekbones for a super natural glow. Lots of different ways to use this!

For Pores

NARS Pore & Shine Control Primer. Another one for the oily girls out there, this primer is excellent for keeping your forehead, nose, and any other troublesome areas from looking like a disco ball. I smooth this over the face for an instant blurring effect. I love when a product can do more than one thing that’s why I keep this one stocked in my kit. It minimizes pores, controls shine and blurs imperfections. You can also use this over your makeup to touch up- just use your fingers. I like using this over makeup to touch up- but really it’s perfect for minimizing the appearance of pores!

Color Correcting Primers

Great for when I need to add luminosity to skin that’s looking a little on the dull side. It makes the complexion look more vibrant. I can’t say how much the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Makeup Color Base in Lavender Pink has come to my rescue when traveling with clients or even on myself. Adds vibrance to the skin, diminishes the appearance of fine lines and large pores. Now that’s what I’m talking about!

Helps reduce the appearance of yellow undertones in fair skin making it more significantly brighter and radiant. I like the Clinique Super Primer Colour Corrects Sallowness. Sometimes I add a small amount mixed into a foundation for the most natural radiant finish.

Best for skin tones that have lots of redness- green neutralizes it. If you have rosacea everywhere then use a thin layer all over or for a specific area with acne- just target that zone only. I’m a big fan of the Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Redness Correcting Primer. I also love the one by Dermalogica, Redness Relief Primer SPF 20. It’s super calming!

I find that it also does a great job at neutralizing any redness. If there are any purple tones (girls with dark under eye circles- you feel me) the yellow cancels that darkness. So many ways to use a Yellow corrector- try to also use it under the eyes as a highlighter- I love bright under eyes! The one I’m kind of obsessed with is Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Makeup Color Base Yellow.

A staple in my kit. I’ll tell you why- it hides age spots, melasma, dark circles and any any unwanted skin pigmentation. Especially if you have any blue under your eyes. Currently I’m using this one by Smashbox.

There are so many amazing primers out there that I have been wanting to try. I’m always looking for new ones so if there is a product you’d like to introduce me to, please do so and share with me in the comments below! xx
