French Girl Style: What I Wore In Paris

What I Wore In Paris

In Paris, women live according to one law: make it look easy and keep it simple. Their seemingly effortless beauty is so alluring, so mesmerizing that American women (myself included) are quickly becoming avid Francophiles, desperate to dress like Parisian it-girls. Still, what some people fail to realize is that the French girl je ne sais quoiis more than just the perfect top and red lipstick—it’s a lifestyle. To achieve the Parisian look, one must first have the attitude.

While in Paris, I found myself drawn to red lipstick—not just in the evening, but during the day. Whatever time of day, French women are always prepared; they dress as if they will run into their next great love in line at the bakery. If they do (and they might—this is the City of Love, after all), then red lipstick is a must, provided the rest of the look is minimal, simple and polished.

With my red lip on, I selected my outfits. Whether wandering the Champs-Élysées, people-watching near the Seine, or sipping a latte at Café de Flore, I too wanted to be prepared for my date with destiny. Here’s what I wore in Paris…

French Girl Style: Makeup

The recipe for my perfect Parisian red is Laura Mercier’s Ruby Red lip liner paired with MAC’s Russian Red and Ruby Woo, layered. Finding the right red is all about specificity: it may require mixing several shades to get the desired effect. As for the rest of my beauty look, I kept it paired way down to balance the statement lip. A dash of Kevyn Aucoin brow in the blonde shade creates softness in my already thick, dark brows.

A light dusting of Tom Ford bronzer in Terra to my cheeks and eyelids gives me dimension where I need it. Following that, a hint of Glossier’s Cloud Paint blush in Puff on the apples of my cheeks (and just a touch on the brow bone) gives me a romantic flush. Finally, to complete the eyes I use just one coat of Serge Lutens mascara and a navy liner by Smashbox. I smudge just a small amount on my upper lash line, but only halfway to open my eyes and make them appear brighter.

In The Early Afternoon

Outfit One: A navy Chloe skirt, paired with black suede heels by Prada made me feel feminine, but playful. The trick to pulling off a mini is to leave something to the imagination, which is why a modest, vanilla bean blouse by Vince is the ideal balance. I threw my hair into a ponytail and headed to the carousel. I have to add that my lipstick made it through the cotton candy!

Outfit Two: The fan print of my Equipment blouse feels retro and chic and I absolutely love wearing it. I paired it with a cream pencil skirt by Gucci and a bright, coral-red Chanel purse for a burst of color. Sunglasses by Celine are my go-to because they are ultra-flattering on my face shape.

Finally, a pair of mismatched navy mules by Chloe complete the outfit. Sure, heels may seem impractical for a walk in through the park, but like a Parisian, I refuse to live life half way, or put function over fashion. Flats are for amateurs.

In The Evening, Before Drinks

Outfit Three: You do not have to wear all black to feel Parisian, but a blazer will do the trick. As the day turned to night, I threw on a multicolored, tweed Chanel blazer over a linen tank I found in a boutique store in Paris (I have similar ones from Zara that I love). I wore the same Chanel bag and my signature Celine frames.

I opted for Mother Denim mid-rise jeans because they flatter my shape and are comfortable to wear. Lastly, Givenchy heels from last season finish the look. (Don’t worry, I curated some similar pairs below.)
