For me, the modern gentlewoman look is all about a well tailored suit…
My recent addition to my closet is this black suit that I picked up while in Paris during Fashion Week this past March. Gucci’s new collection has inspired my inner garconne. For me it’s the perfect balance of masculine and feminine with a surprise ruffle on the sleeve and pearly buttons. Most of all it’s classic. I love the embellished suit pants with a statement belt (it’s attached to it) for a modern touch. This is my power suit.
A detailed pantsuit is all the best of my favorite bygone era, with a dash of Annie Hall.
Of course, a good #bosslady ensemble doesn’t need to be Gucci. I frequent Zara and Theory for powerful pieces at a lower price point and I wear them constantly. I like buying clothes that I can can wear years from now, assuming that I can still fit in them. I’m also not afraid to mix it up—this menswear look is just as elegant worn as separates. All of my suits eventually get worn as separates, sometimes with a pair of tennis shoes and a cotton t-shirt. Add heels (or sneakers) and a statement accessory and channel your inner Diane Keaton. The perfect balance of masculine and feminine. Who’s with me?
There are no beauty rules when it comes to a modern gentlewoman look.
Whatever you wear should make you feel unstoppable. I happened to wear mine with a 60s-era dramatic winged liner and a pink-nude lip (read my How To Wear a classic 60’s Makeup Look post), which is Spanish Pink by Tom Ford. It has been one of my favorite lipsticks for years now, always packed in my artist kit. Bonus: The Tom Ford lipstick cap doubles as a mirror on-the-go! Since my eyes are lined pretty dramatically, I like to keep my hair natural and easy—wavy with lots of volume. There was a moment in my life when all I did was wear it straight and polished because I thought it better suited my menswear look. Not this time—the messier the better!
